Savon Voima Verkko improves metering efficiency with Aidon's Metering as a Service

Savon Voima Verkko, a Finnish distribution system operator, selected Aidon's Metering as a Service (MaaS) solution to streamline its metering operations and free up resources for development. The agreement expanded a partnership spanning more than two decades, during which Savon Voima Verkko had adopted Aidon's smart metering technology and pioneered the use of meter data for low-voltage network monitoring.

Savon Voima Verkko's metering infrastructure covers approximately 120,000 electricity meters. The company's metering renewal programme introduced Aidon's next-generation 7000-series smart meters, using local radio networks (RF technology) and LTE-M mobile connectivity.

MaaS model frees up resources for development

With Aidon's Metering as a Service model, Savon Voima Verkko purchases meter reading and the operation of its metering infrastructure as a managed service. Aidon is responsible for meter reading, device connectivity, and the collection and delivery of metering data into market processes.

The service model has freed up resources within Savon Voima Verkko's metering team, allowing it to focus on process development, fault management and the use of meter data to support network planning and operations, rather than spending time on routine data collection and investigating missing readings.

This approach also helps Savon Voima Verkko respond to evolving regulatory requirements, including more frequent metering data delivery and new functionalities, while maintaining efficient operations and high-quality customer service.

Automated processes support efficient operations

Automation plays a central role in the daily operation of the metering service. The systems automatically identify anomalies, such as missing time series, enabling customer service personnel to resolve straightforward cases while more complex investigations are handled by the metering team.

Aidon provides a dedicated Service Manager as the primary contact for the MaaS service. Regular service reviews cover meter reading performance, operational issues and development needs, supporting reliable service delivery and continuous improvement.

"We haven't had to worry about whether basic data collection works. When challenges have arisen, I've been able to trust that Aidon will resolve them," says Mikko Vähäsaari, who is responsible for metering services at Savon Voima Verkko.

By outsourcing routine metering operations to Aidon, Savon Voima Verkko can concentrate its internal expertise on activities that bring greater value to network operations and customers.

Smart meter data supports network management

The role of next-generation smart meters extends well beyond measuring electricity consumption. Savon Voima Verkko uses meter data to support power quality monitoring, improve the targeting of network investments and develop services for its customers.

One example is the detection of neutral faults. When a meter detects such a fault, it automatically disconnects the electricity supply for safety reasons. At the same time, a notification is sent to the customer, and a field crew is dispatched to investigate the issue.

The objective is to identify and address network problems as early as possible, ideally before customers experience any disruption.

The development of smart metering functionalities has also provided Savon Voima Verkko with new capabilities and data packages to support its daily operations. These capabilities help the company make better use of its metering infrastructure and the information it provides.
