Bodens Energi Nät enhances grid operations with new smart metering system

Bodens Energi Nät, a Swedish distribution system operator, modernised its smart metering infrastructure with Aidon's automated meter management (AMM) solution. The three-year renewal project covered nearly all of the company's 17,000 electricity meters, providing more reliable metering data, improved visibility into the low-voltage network and more efficient outage management.
Improved visibility into the distribution network
Bodens Energi Nät had three main objectives for its metering renewal: to meet the functional requirements set by Swedish legislation, improve visibility into the low-voltage network and enhance outage management.
The latter two objectives were particularly important due to the characteristics of the company's distribution network, which covers a large, sparsely populated area with long distances, numerous overhead lines and some ageing infrastructure.
The new Aidon smart meters provide faster and more reliable meter readings, along with detailed information about outages and power quality. This gives Bodens Energi Nät better insight into network conditions and helps its personnel identify and resolve problems more efficiently.
Faster fault identification and more efficient field operations
Previously, investigating electricity supply problems could require technicians to travel several hours to a customer's premises, even when the cause was relatively minor, such as a blown fuse. During winter, reaching some properties could be particularly challenging.
With the new smart metering system, outage alarms and detailed power quality information help the service team identify potential causes of problems remotely. This makes fault investigation faster and reduces the need for unnecessary site visits.
In some cases, customers can resolve issues themselves with guidance from Bodens Energi Nät's service team, further improving efficiency and customer service.
Smart metering supports evolving grid needs
The new AMM system provides Bodens Energi Nät with a stronger foundation for managing its distribution network. Digitalised metering processes and remote monitoring of network events improve operational efficiency and support more informed decisions.
The system also helps the company respond to changing electricity distribution needs as industrial development, new residential areas and increasing electrification place new demands on the local network.
With reliable metering data, improved outage information and enhanced power quality monitoring, Bodens Energi Nät has gained valuable tools for managing its network more efficiently and maintaining reliable electricity distribution for its customers.
